• World Investment Report 2025 - The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) released its "World Investment Report 2025" on June 19. According to the report, global foreign direct investment (FDI) is projected to decline by a significant 11% in 2024, reaching approximately US$15 trillion ($1.5 trillion). This is the second consecutive year that global FDI has declined. Several complex factors are responsible for this decline. Geopolitical tensions, trade fragmentation, intense industrial policy competition, and rising financial risks and uncertainties are reshaping the global investment landscape.
The decline in global foreign direct investment last year was primarily due to a sharp 22% drop in FDI in developed economies. Europe, in particular, saw a decline of up to 58%. Capital flows to developing countries remained generally stable, but significant regional variations exist. Furthermore, the report notes the "reciprocal tariff" measures implemented by the United States, which have exacerbated global trade tensions. This has severely impacted the international investment landscape.
According to the report, sectors including renewable energy, transport, water and sanitation saw a decline of over 30% in FDI last year. In contrast, FDI in the digital economy saw a 14% increase, indicating growing opportunities in this sector. To bridge the financing gap for the Sustainable Development Goals, developing countries need around US$40 trillion per year. According to the World Investment Report 2025, foreign direct investment (FDI) in India is expected to register a marginal decline of 1.9% to $27.55 billion in 2024.
India ranked 15th globally in FDI inflows (2024) , up from 16th in 2023. India remained the top FDI recipient in South Asia. India saw growth in greenfield projects, especially in manufacturing (e.g. semiconductors) and digital infrastructure. The United States remained the largest FDI recipient , while India ranked 16th. The world's top 5 FDI recipient countries in 2024 were the United States ($279 billion), Singapore ($143 billion), Hong Kong, China ($126 billion), China ($116 billion), Luxembourg ($106 billion).

• ICC announces major changes to Test, ODI, and T20 Internationals- The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently announced six changes to men's cricket rules. These rules are effective for Test cricket for the new World Test Championship (2025-27). These rules will be effective for limited-overs formats (ODIs and T20s) from July 2, 2025.
6 rules of cricket were changed:
1. Stop Clock Rule in Test Cricket - The ICC has now decided to implement the stop clock rule in Test cricket. Under this rule, if the fielding team is more than 60 seconds late in starting an over, they will be given two warnings. If this rule is still violated, they will be penalized five runs.
This rule has already been implemented in T-20 and ODI cricket a year ago.
2. Penalty for short runs - The ICC has also changed the short run rule for all three formats. Deliberate short runs previously carried a penalty of 5 runs. Now, if a batsman deliberately misses a run to steal an extra run, the umpire will ask the fielding team which of the two batsmen on the pitch they want on strike. The 5-run penalty will also remain in effect.
3. The ball will not be changed if saliva is accidentally applied to it - The ban on applying saliva to the ball will remain in effect. However, it will not be mandatory to change the ball if saliva is accidentally applied to it. Umpires will only change the ball if its condition changes significantly, such as if it is very wet or has an extra shine.
This decision will be based on the umpire's discretion. If he deems the condition of the ball to be unchanged, it will not be changed. This rule applies to all three formats.
4. Catch reviews will also check for LBW - The ICC has also changed the catch rule. If a catch review is found to be incorrect, but the ball hits the pad, the TV umpire will also check for LBW. If the batsman is out LBW, he will be given out. This rule applies to all three formats.
5. Catch on a no-ball - If a soft signal (reviewed by the umpire) is taken and the catch on a no-ball is correct, the batting team will receive one extra run for the no-ball. If the catch is incorrect, the batting team will receive one extra run for the no-ball plus any runs scored by running.
Previously, if a catch was in doubt, the field umpire would refer it to the third umpire, and if the TV umpire determined it was a no-ball, the catch would not be checked. However, now it will be checked. This rule applies to all three formats.
6. ICC introduces new powerplay rules for T20 matches - The ICC has revised the powerplay rules for T20 matches. The new rules, which will take effect in July, specify that if a match's overs are reduced due to rain or any other reason, the powerplay will also be reduced accordingly.
Only two fielders can remain outside the 30-yard line during the powerplay. These rules were implemented to make shorter T20 matches more fair and accurate.
Recently, 2 more rules were changed:
1. The ball will be changed after 35 overs in ODIs - The ICC has approved the use of a single new ball after the 35th over in ODI cricket. This will help fast bowlers in the death overs.
2. Approval of a change to the boundary catching rules - The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) recommended a change to the boundary catching rules. This change relates to catches taken when the ball bounces outside the boundary. The MCC will incorporate this change from October 2026. The ICC has approved it. It will come into effect from the Test match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on June 17.
If the ball is bounced outside the boundary, there will be two conditions :
First , on many occasions, players standing on the boundary would bounce the ball once while inside the boundary, then cross the boundary and take the catch from within the boundary. Now, this will no longer be considered a catch, and the batsman will be awarded a run.
Second - If a player goes outside the boundary, jumps in the air and throws the ball inside, then another player catches it, then it will be valid only if the player who threw the ball is also inside the boundary.
